The Dutchess County Planning Federation is beginning a series of workshops and eNewsletters to help local leaders and residents understand the issues around affordable housing. What is it, and how can affordable housing be developed in a way that respects the existing character of our varied communities while addressing the needs of our varied residents?

Part 1 in the series will answer the most basic questions about this sometimes controversial topic:

What is the difference between affordable, workforce and welfare housing?
        -
What is Section 8?
        -
What have we learned from older, poorly planned "public housing projects"?
        -
How is today's affordable housing different from the "projects" of the past (with local examples)?
        -
Who lives in today's affordable housing?
        -
What is the need for affordable housing in our communities?
        -
What are various ways to develop affordable housing in today's market?


Course Credit:
This course may quality for 2.0 hours toward meeting the New York State mandatory training requirement for local planning and zoning board officials.  Letters certifying course attendance will be available the evening of the event.

DC Planning Federation



The Dutchess County Planning Federation supports the efforts of local volunteers involved in the community planning process throughout the County. The Federation, in partnership with the Dutchess County Department of Planning and Development, has presented educational workshops to local officials and residents for over 20 years. This cooperative effort also produces a monthly educational eNewsletter that reaches over 1,100 email subscribers. The Federation is governed by a Board elected by members at the annual meeting.
